National Fire Prevention Week and How You Can Get Involved

Fire safety should always be a priority for homeowners. We should all know how to react to and prevent fires if they ever occur. This week is Fire Prevention Week 2026. In this week’s blog, we are going to talk about fire safety and what it means for your insurance policy. Fire Prevention Week can save your life and your home. You should get more involved in your community whenever you can to raise awareness and invest in the future of your neighbors. You don’t have to be in the fire department to do this, either. The team at Ebensburg Insurance is ready to join the effort to increase safety efforts and awareness. If you are a small business owner, this is a great time to bring the information to your audience. Let’s jump into more information on fire prevention week!

What is Fire Prevention Week?

Fire Prevention week happens annually and is an effort to raise awareness for fire safety. It is a campaign that takes place in both the United States and Canada. The first took place in 1952 after President Calvin Coolidge declared its first observance. The National Fire Protection Association is the head of the effort and they choose the theme each year for educators and businesses to shape their information and lessons around. It takes place during the week of October 9th in memory of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 as it began on the 8th and burned until the 10th.

This Year’s Theme for the Week

This year, the Association has chosen the theme “Charge Into Fire Safety.” They are also using the tagline “Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” They have focused the program this year on educating people on lithium-ion batteries. This is a very relevant subject, considering how many battery-powered things we encounter in our everyday lives. Lithium-ion fires are increasing at a rate of 10% per year. Safely charging these batteries is very important for the safety of yourself, your home, and your family. You should be using the right cables with the right devices, placing them on the right surfaces and in safe locations. It is also important to properly dispose of these batteries as they can cause harm after you get them as well if you don’t follow regulations.

Why You Should Participate in Fire Prevention Week

The fire death rate per million of the population in the United States has continued to increase over time. A lot of this number can be attributed to more electronics in households and severe weather patterns. There are lives at risk and fires can affect anyone. You don’t have to be in the fire department to help spread awareness and alert people of proper fire safety. If you own or manage a business, you should consider participating and talking to your audience about the importance of fire safety. During the week, you can bring people together for an educational workshop or presentation, invite your staff or others to participate in some kind of fire safety training, etc. Anything you do will be beneficial to not only the safety of others and your community, but also to your business. When your brand or company is focused on causes that help the people that live in your community, you are showing your audience that you care about them and their wellbeing. This connects you to them and shows that you are a part of the community as well. Some of the other positives to participating include:

  • Raising Awareness: When you help educate your employees and other people in your area on fire safety and prevention efforts, you could save lives and prevent damage to homes.

  • Workplace Safety: The more your employees know about fire safety, the more prepared they are to deal with fire hazards and respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

  • Builds Trust: Starting fire safety initiatives makes you a more trusted organization. This is something that customers value greatly in 2026.

  • Increases Visibility:By distributing products or posting content on social media that promotes fire safety, you are getting your name in front of more people and spreading a message that is important for people to know.

Consider Partnering Up with Your Local Fire Department

This week is completely centered around education, awareness, and safety. In this case, who knows your business and community more intimately than your local fire department. If you team up with them, you can ask them to join you in your efforts by giving presentations to your team or providing you with things like fire blankets or extinguishers if you need them. If you want to do something outside of your office, consider sponsoring the fire department in an event they want to throw for the week. This is a great way to build trust and community with your customers. They see that you care about them and the causes they likely support.
